We’re incredibly proud to be the technology partner driving the digital NROL service at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust through our autonom-e platform.
It’s great to see the continued momentum behind NROL, strengthened by the recent BMJ Open publication from colleagues at ELHT and Lancaster University evaluating its large-scale implementation across NHS services: https://lnkd.in/eAFV7wRt.

Connecting with the Next Generation of Bioengineers at The University of Sheffield
Last week, ELAROS 24/7 Limited had the pleasure of visiting Bioengineering (Interdisciplinary Engineering) University of Sheffield to speak with students as part of their Research Seminars module, organised by Professor Chris Holland.
It was fantastic to return as University of Sheffield Bioengineering alumni and introduce students to the field of digital health, sharing how ELAROS works to address clinical need, particularly in long-term conditions.
Blesson Ezra discussed the process of progressing digital technology through different Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), outlining where autonom-e currently sits in its development journey, as well as introducing the new MoRIS early-stage research project that he is project-managing. Thank you Izaak Walker for helping shape the session!
As always, the students were engaged, enthusiastic, and full of thoughtful questions. We always appreciate the opportunity to connect, share insights, and hopefully inspire the next generation of biomedical engineers.

Major new ME/CFS & Long Covid study launches with Imperial College and the ME Association
ELAROS is proud to announce the news of our latest investment into ground-breaking research to help world-leading scientists uncover shared pathways between ME/CFS and Long Covid. The ME Association is investing £1.1m into the Rosetta Stone study – the largest ever single investment in biomedical research by any charity in this field, and the largest research project of its kind.
Top scientists at Imperial College London will lead the three-year Rosetta Stone study, conducting side-by-side cellular and molecular analyses of ME/CFS and Long Covid. This will offer an unprecedented look into what these conditions share, which may take us closer to diagnostic biomarkers and treatment pathways.
Investigating links between ME/CFS & Long Covid
Back in May 2020, close to the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ME Association became aware of an increasing number of people who were developing ME/CFS symptoms following a Covid-19 infection and the subsequent emergence of Long Covid.
Since then , it has become apparent that there are important clinical and pathological overlaps between ME/CFS and Long Covid and that much of the research that has been carried out into the cause and treatment of Long Covid is also relevant to ME/CFS. So, it makes sense to study both conditions in parallel and in detail – which is what the Rosetta Stone study will do. We are delighted that this research, which is the most comprehensive study into the two conditions to date, is being led by Professors Danny Altmann and Rosemary Boyton, and colleagues at Imperial College London. We are also pleased that it will include a collaboration with Dr Jackie Cliff at Brunel, Professor Chris Ponting’s DecodeME team in Edinburgh, and the UK ME/CFS Biobank at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

What is the Rosetta Stone study ?
The Rosetta Stone study will decode the immunological profile
of ME/CFS and Long Covid using samples from groups of volunteers who have these conditions, in a direct side-by-side comparison of cohorts, with the specific aim of learning about underlying mechanisms through analysis of shared pathways between the conditions. The three-year study aims to unlock answers to the clinical and pathological overlaps that exist between ME/CFS and Long Covid.
The Rosetta Stone study will examine 250 people with ME/CFS and 250 people with Long Covid, alongside matched healthy control groups. The significant size of the cohorts and the technology and methods being employed, aim to increase the reliability of the results.
Drawing also on the cohorts and the scientific expertise developed in other studies such as the NIHR WILCO Long COVID study at Imperial College London and the DecodeME study at the University of Edinburgh, researchers will use a range of techniques to build a clearer picture of the immunological profile of these conditions. Stool, blood and saliva samples from volunteer participants will be analysed alongside self-reported information collected using ELAROS’ “C19-YRS” smartphone app to generate datasets allowing the scientists to apply machine learning methods to discover shared molecular pathways between the two conditions.
Which scientists are leading the Rosetta Stone study ?
The lead investigators at Imperial College London include Professors Danny Altmann and Rosemary Boyton.
The hope for the scientists is that this initial research can provide more insight into the associations between ME/CFS and Long Covid and as a result, help pave the way for better scientific understanding to lead to improved treatment solutions in the future.
There has been little research into the relationship between ME/CFS and Long Covid, which are both post-infectious, persistent conditions, with similar symptoms. We want to use the latest technology and samples provided by volunteers, to try and highlight the common immunological themes and pathways, hopefully informing the most promising therapeutic approaches.
Millions have had their lives destroyed by the disabilities that come with Long Covid and ME/CFS. We’re hoping that our work will make clearer the underlying mechanisms and inform further clinical trials and therapeutics in this area.

The ELAROS team came together for our annual Winter Planning Day, an important moment for reflection, collaboration, and shaping our strategy for 2026 and beyond.
The morning opened with a presentation from Blesson Ezra who shared progress from our South Yorkshire Innovation Programme wearables project and outlined next-stage plans for large-scale validation. Scarlett Shaw and Michalina Gers then showcased how AI could improve clinical insight generation, automate task management, and help users track symptom patterns, predict relapses, and receive personalised support.
The afternoon moved into strategic planning led by Professor Paul O’ Brien who outlined the external healthcare landscape, shifts towards home-based care, digital transformation, prevention-focused pathways, NHS economic pressures, and what this means for ELAROS in 2026. We were then joined by Simon Monaghan (Innovate UK Business Growth), who facilitated a forward-looking session to map ELAROS’s development over the next five years, including opportunities in new condition areas, new venture structures, and international funding routes.
It was a valuable and energising day, a reminder of how much we achieved in 2025 and how much opportunity lies ahead. Thank you to our team, partners, and invited contributors for shaping such an engaging and ambitious agenda!

We are pleased to share our latest publication as co-authors in the European Journal of Health Economics as part of the NIHR funded LOCOMOTION study alongside colleagues at University of Leeds and University of Oxford.

Our study estimates that Long Covid is costing the UK economy approximately £8 billion per year, including both direct healthcare costs and indirect economic impacts such as reduced productivity and workforce absence.
This important study demonstrates that Long Covid is associated with a substantial economic impact nationally, estimated at £8.1 billion annually and £24.2 billion since its emergence, comparable to the annual cost of £9.4 billion for stroke.
The effectiveness of Long Covid specialist clinic services warrants further research. The substantial national economic impact of Long Covid warrants a nationwide care strategy and reinforces the need for scalable, accessible digital tools like our C19-YRS platform that facilitated this 2.5-year research project, whilst simultaneously supporting patients and healthcare providers in managing the long-term impact of the condition.

On Monday 28th July, we welcomed Davide Righi back to ELAROS for his year in industry, having previously joined ELAROS in the summer of 2024 as a Digital Marketing Intern.
Davide impressed on his first with the company, so we are delighted to welcome him back for a longer period before he returns to the University of Loughborough to complete his undergraduate in Bioengineering. In the role of Commercial R&D Manager, Davide will work closely with our Director of Commercialisation – Román Rocha Lawrence – expanding the use of our live systems in the UK and abroad.

]]>Michalina Gers and Scarlett Shaw Join Elaros as Software Quality Assurance Interns
In May, Michalina Gers and Scarlett Shaw joined ELAROS for a Software Quality Assurance Internship to support the advancement of our new NROL project and the Dysphagia Guide.
Both Michalina and Scarlett are in their final year of a BSc in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence at Sheffield Hallam University. Throughout their course they have immersed themselves in a range of topics including core computer science principles, databases, computer architecture, artificial intelligence and machine learning, software design, UI/UX design, and advanced programming.
We got to meet them during the annual Professional Software Projects Module at Sheffield Hallam where their group was tasked with rethinking and redesigning our Sleepy Fox app. Both Michalina and Scarlett excelled in this project and produced work that the whole team was impressed with.
At ELAROS they will focus on further developing their programming and software quality management skills, on the C19-YRS and our NROL project, as well as deepening their understanding of digital healthcare.
It is a pleasure to have Michalina and Scarlett join the team!

ELAROS is thrilled to be named one of just nine national winners of the SBRI Healthcare competition, supported by the Health Innovation Network! Our winning project, Adjustments by Open-OH, is focused on delivering work-related mental health interventions for people living with long-term conditions.
We’re proud to be partnering with Cordell Health Ltd and Affinity Health at Work to co-develop a digital tool that supports workplace mental health for individuals with conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Long Covid, and ME/CFS.This opportunity allows us to accelerate the development and launch of a smart digital occupational health solution – supporting people on their rehabilitation journey who face significant challenges at work and want to remain in employment.
Building on our previous work with Open-OH, we’ll enhance the platform with co-designed, evidence-based interventions that tackle key mental health stressors like anxiety, brain fog, and stigma.

In March 2025, ELAROS proudly sponsored the Clinical Post Covid Society’s Annual Conference in Birmingham in.
Our Director of Research & Development, Román Rocha Lawrence, delivered one of the closing sessions titled “Looking to the Future”, which featured three impactful case studies from our C19-YRS platform:
- Scaling NHS support services through self-referrals and improving patient reach
- Supporting hard-to-reach patients with Long Covid via regional support and signposting
- A national collaboration to drive our ME/CFS initiative and support patients and clinics alike
Furthermore as part of the programme, Jeremy (Jez) Gee & Faye Peary from Airedale NHS Foundation Trust delivered an excellent presentation on their Vocational Rehabilitation project with ELAROS. Oliwia Zwara and Roman Rocha Lawrence had the pleasure of catching up with our many other collaborators on the day.
